West Oxfordshire District Council is using its planning powers to make sure new homes are only occupied once the right sewage infrastructure is in place.
Due to long-standing capacity problems in the district’s sewage network, the Council has introduced special planning conditions on some housing developments. These conditions mean homes cannot be lived in until essential wastewater upgrades are completed and working, helping to protect rivers, streets and neighbourhoods from pollution and sewage flooding.
The Council is working closely with Thames Water, national regulators and local groups to push for long-overdue investment in wastewater infrastructure. This approach is about making sure new development is sustainable, properly serviced and meets the standards residents expect.
At present, just under 1,000 homes across West Oxfordshire are affected by these conditions, with upgrades clearly identified before occupation can take place.
