Accessible home transforms family's independence

It has made a huge difference for the whole family

“It’s just absolutely amazing… I feel so grateful and overwhelmed,” says 17-year-old Jacob, who has moved with his family into a newly adapted accessible bungalow in West Oxfordshire.

Jacob, who uses a wheelchair, can now open the front door independently, reach the sink, and even start preparing his own food thanks to lower counters, wider doorways, ramp access and an accessible wet room. After spending the past year living in the family lounge, he says he’s most excited about “having freedom to go out and meet friends”.

The former council home was transformed in partnership with Cottsway Housing, supported by a Disabled Facilities Grant and affordable housing contributions.

The move has made a huge difference for the whole family, offering the independence and space they previously couldn’t achieve in their two-storey home.

The Council continues to work with partners to increase the number of affordable, accessible homes so people of all ages can live safely and independently in their local communities.
