To provide greater flexibility for Witney workers and visitors
People working, living and visiting Witney could benefit from greater parking flexibility at Marriotts Walk car park, under new proposals to increase the number of spaces available for stays up to 12 hours.
West Oxfordshire District Council has agreed to consult on changes to the maximum stay on Levels 6, 7 and 8 of the multi-storey carpark, creating more long-stay parking opportunities for people who need to spend longer in the town.
Councillor Alistair Wray, Executive Member for Environment, said:
“We know that local people need parking that works for their day, particularly those working longer or varied shifts. These proposals would create more spaces where people can park for up to 12 hours, giving them more choice without reducing the convenient four-hour parking available on the lower levels for shoppers and visitors.
“Marriotts Walk car park is well placed for people working in the town centre and those needing to spend longer in Witney, so it makes sense to explore increasing the number of spaces where people can park for up to 12 hours. It’s a simple change that could make a real difference for people who work in the town, visit the hospital or need to stay for longer.”
If introduced, the changes would create 50 additional long-stay spaces, increasing the number of 12-hour parking spaces at Marriotts Walk from 146 to 196.
The additional long-stay spaces are intended to support people working in and around Witney town centre, particularly those with varied working patterns. By providing greater flexibility, the changes help ensure parking is available to meet a wider range of community needs.
To further improve safety and accessibility, the Council is also proposing to extend the parking enforcement area at Marriotts Walk to include a small section of pavement next to an emergency access point. Clear new signage will help ensure the area remains unobstructed and available for emergency vehicles when needed.
Under the proposals, levels 1 to 5 of the car park would continue to operate at a four-hour maximum stay for shoppers and town centre visitors.
