West Oxfordshire District Council is helping residents stay flood prepared this winter

West Oxfordshire District Council (WODC) is encouraging residents to take steps to prepare for possible flooding as the wetter months approach.
Cllr Lidia Arciszewska, Executive Member for the Environment, said:
"We know how stressful and damaging flooding can be, especially for those who have been affected more than once. That’s why we’re acting early to help residents get ready. While the Council can't fix every issue, we’re doing what we can. From clearing our ditches, to sharing information so people can plan ahead."
“We’re also pleased to announce that we will be hosting the Waterways Fair, taking place on Saturday 25 October in Witney, bringing together experts and organisations to talk about flooding and water management in West Oxfordshire.”
Last September, a month’s worth of rain fell in just 36 hours in Oxfordshire, flooding hundreds of roads and properties. Many residents had already experienced damage from Storm Henk earlier in the year.
With extreme weather becoming more common, the council is launching a campaign to raise awareness and share practical advice to help people prepare and stay safe in the event of flooding.
Following flooding from Storm Bert in November last year, WODC officers visited every reported affected property. They gathered information, supported residents and passed findings to Oxfordshire County Council, which is the Local Lead Flooding Authority in Oxfordshire. This has led to official reports recommending actions to help reduce the risk of future flooding.
To support local resilience, the Council is clearing ditches on land it owns and reminding landowners of their duty to do the same. Ubico, the council’s environmental services partner, will continue clearing key trash screens and grills, and delivering sandbags to residents who need extra support.
A flooding awareness campaign will run throughout winter, offering clear and timely advice to residents. People are reminded to report flooding, especially when water enters their property, as this helps the council and its partners understand what’s happening and respond better in future.
