Learning in the landscape: Kilkenny volunteers explore wildflower identification

In June, the Kilkenny Lane Country Park Volunteers were joined by Rachel Crookes and Imogen Parker from Wild Oxfordshire. They led the volunteers in botanical surveying of the wildflower meadow. We learnt about ecology surveying processes and how to identify species typically found in calcareous grassland. Some of the plants found included: wild carrot, yarrow, bird's-foot-trefoil, black knapweed, goat's beard, oxeye daisy, pyramidal and pineappleweed.
"My subject knowledge is limited and I went away enthused by the delivery, content and practical application of today's lesson. The various levels of knowledge of attendees added to the lesson - great dialogue between tutor(s) and attendees.
A really worthwhile 2-hour lesson which will pay dividends - thank you to all involved with the day." Kilkenny participant.
The Kilkenny Lane Country Park Volunteers meet the last Wednesday of the month at the country park, if you are interested in joining please email ecology@westoxon.gov.uk.
