Adopt a Bird Box with LWVP

-and be invited to an exclusive chick ringing session

The LWVP are running a new ‘adopt a bird box’ scheme that you might like to know about.

The Lower Windrush Valley Project (LWVP) continues to work with environmental organisations, mineral operators, landowners and the local community to coordinate a range of initiatives that:
  • Strengthen and develop the evolving landscape of the valley
  • Protect and enhance the biodiversity it supports
  • Improve opportunities for people to access and enjoy the countryside
  • Raise awareness, understanding and involvement in the diverse issues that influence the environment in the valley
Our most recent project is an ‘adopt a bird box’ scheme – we have recently installed a number of passerine and little owl boxes along the Windrush Path at Standlake, to support local bird populations. Local supporters have been invited to ‘adopt’ the boxes, where they receive information on their bird box and an invitation to an exclusive chick ringing session with our local British Trust of Ornithology ambassador.

We have several establish raptor boxes at our nature reserves which have previously been well used – our barn owl box at Rushy Common has been particularly successful, with three healthy chicks reared in 2019 (see main picture, photo credit Pat Wixey), and we hope that the new boxes yield the same results! If you would like details on adopting a box, please email:

lwvp@oxfordshire.gov.uk.

The LWVP has a number of active volunteers who last year have contributed over 400 hours of their time to support the work of the LWVP. Their roles include site and footpath wardens, a task group who help to look after Rushy Common and Standlake Common Nature Reserves, and office and events volunteers. If you would like to find out more about volunteering opportunities, or purchase a bird hide key for our reserves, please contact the project office email above.
